With a focus on returning to their roots and bringing in local talent, could the New Zealand Breakers be the perfect home for Flynn Cameron?
The 24-year-old will depart Melbourne United after two seasons, and the Tall Blacks star could be on his way home.
“New ownership, New Zealand flavour, they’re talking about bringing the Kiwis back,” Peter Hooley said on The Marketplace.
“It does look like everything’s trying to line up with the New Zealand Breakers, returning home.
“He seems like the perfect piece to bring back in, long-term deal and say ‘hey, we’re going to continue to have this as our foundation’, because he’s an exciting prospect.”
Hooley said Cameron’s experience at United was invaluable, with more opportunity at a new club setting him up for a bright future.
“If Matthew Dellavedova does not sign with Melbourne United and he signs elsewhere, OK there’s more opportunity there for Flynn Cameron, but Melbourne now have Dash Daniels as a Next Star and he’s going to continue to grow his opportunity towards the draft,” he said.
“If you’re Flynn Cameron … who by the way has improved immensely under Dean Vickerman, learning every day from Delly, Shea Ili, Chris Goulding, Ian Clark … in the Championship Series, he was a bit of a caged animal where he’s just waiting for the opportunity to break out and now he’ll likely get that.”
Cameron made 36 appearances with Melbourne this season, averaging 5.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 11 minutes’ game-time.
United faces a period of significant change, with Jack White declining his option to pursue overseas opportunities, Akech Aliir departing, and Dellavedova attracting offers from around the league.
