"You feel better with that comfortability and knowing that you’re playing for someone that wants you to play for them."

Nathan Sobey has had one final shot at his former coach Justin Schueller, saying his off-season comments about his departure from Brisbane were a “dog shot”.

Sobey’s move to the South East Melbourne Phoenix was headlined by Bullets coach Justin Schueller indicating Sobey didn’t fit the club’s culture and he wasn’t a winner.

“I thought it was a bit of a dog shot,” Sobey told Newscorp about Schueller’s off-season comments.

“You want to play where you’re wanted and I felt that from coach Mike (Kelly) and the rest of the staff here…some people, they want you more and you feel better with that comfortability and knowing that you’re playing for someone that wants you to play for them.”

When discussing Sobey’s exit in April, Schueller said Brisbane needed to bring “winners” to the club.

“Nathan’s an outstanding player and been a good servant of the club, but we really felt like we needed to lean more into our culture and our habits that we believe in every single day that are going to get us the ultimate success,” he told SEN.

“Collectively we just feel like we needed to continue to lean into bringing winners into the club and how we can continue to grow in that space.”

Adding to the stakes, both sides are winless and are desperate for a win to revive their seasons.

Sobey is averaging 13.8 points, his lowest since output since the 2017/18 season.

Tip-off between the Phoenix and Bullets is 8pm AEDT tomorrow, live on ESPN.
