"I've been a different player ever since."

South East Melbourne Phoenix import Joe Wieskamp has opened up on how he has turned his season around after a shaky start.

Wieskamp received a DNP in South East Melbourne’s Round 9 loss to Perth, with some questioning whether his spot on the Phoenix roster was in danger.

A candid Wieskamp admits he knew he needed to improve to get back into the rotation and he has done just that, scoring 22, 12, and 15 points over the last three contests.

"I somewhat knew where I sat, just referring back, just putting in the work day in and day out,” Wieskamp told The Phoenix Files

“I think realising and being a mature professional and understanding that I hadn't been performing up to the standards I set for myself and the organisation had set for me, so realising that I needed to be better, not only offensively but defensively, rebounding and just knowing that I can contribute more to this team.

“It started in the practices in the FIBA Break and I think I've been a different player ever since, my mindset and my aggressiveness, physicality, all those different things.

“I think it's easy to blame it on the coach or whatever but I think it's important for me to look in the mirror and realise that I could be better and I think it's starting to show on the court and hopefully it can continue through the rest of the season."

Phoenix coach Josh King credited Wieskamp's turnaround to “putting the work in”.

South East Melbourne faces Brisbane on Saturday night at 8pm AEDT live on ESPN.
